Presents a collection of recipes for breads and pastries, vegetables, main dishes, and desserts that the family can prepare together.

Publishers Description
For Maria Helm Sinskey—author, award-winning chef, and mother—one of the best ways to spend time with family and friends is to gather in the kitchen to cook. Whether tossing a salad of lettuces fresh from the garden, or filling the house with the scent of Banana–Brown Sugar Muffins and hearty Braised Beef Stew, Maria and her family show you how effortless it is to have fun in the kitchen.

Filled with delicious, easy to prepare, made-from-scratch recipes such as Fresh Rosemary Focaccia, Corn Fritters with Lime, Chicken-Coconut Curry, and Baked Butterscotch Puddings, Family Meals is written for people of all ages. Maria's experience with her own children and those of friends and family prove that when kids help select ingredients and join in the fun of meal preparation, they're more eager to eat what they've cooked, and revel in their culinary triumphs at the table.

Family Meals is much more than just a collection of recipes. Each chapter sparks curiosity about where food comes from and how the foods we love are made through culinary projects such as curing bacon, smoking salmon, and making homemade ricotta cheese. This book is sure to become a staple in your kitchen, and will launch the small to the tall on a delicious culinary journey filled with fresh, wholesome, seasonal meals that are a joy to create and satisfying to eat.

Great Cookbook  Jan 15, 2010
If you lean towards making pancakes and pizza from scratch you will love this cookbook. There is not a bad recipe in this book and the ingredients are very commonplace even in my small town. We have made doughnuts, blueberry pancakes (one a week), cupcakes, pickles (sooo good) and yogurt (gotta try it before you shell out for the $$$greek yogurt again) and everything turns out great. If you mostly buy processed food and don't like to spend much time cooking this is probably not the cookbook for you. If you are at all "foodie" then you will love these foolproof, family friendly recipes.
Enjoy!

Kid and parent friendly  Aug 16, 2009
I cooked from the book before I read the reviews here and was surprised at how many people found the recipes fussy or time-consuming. I am cooking from this book because the things I've tried so far are quick and easy. I made the lamb meatballs,
which my picky eater devoured uncomplainingly; the chicken pot pie, which was a simpler recipe than others I've used; yogurt-marinaded chicken kabobs; and the homemade ice cream popsicles, which took under five minutes.

Not all the recipes are this quick or simple, as others have noted. But there are plenty that are. Having a picky child, I found the ingredients and style a nice transition from my daughter's innate preference for "white food," with the bonus that I could eat the food too. In other words, it's not too unusual or spicy for her, and not too bland and kid-like for me.

The artwork in the book is indeed beautiful and is meant to further the connections between us and our food, and between parent and child, connections in which the author's work is grounded. It's a hard sell in this economic and social climate, but one which is desperately needed to get us away from the speed and unconcern with which we typically regard the idea of cooking.

Beautiful but not practical  Jul 16, 2009
This is a very nice looking book. It's interesting with it's informative tidbits about cuisine and it's a great book to have around, look at alone or with the family. It's not very practical.

This is the sort of cookbook that celebrates meals, but isn't the sort of book that's going to get beat up, spilled on, or otherwise abused in the process of making meals. It has some great ideas, and it offers great inspiration. So it's quite good in background and process, but not for a busy, harried family who wants quick and easy variety.

Awesome book  Jun 27, 2009
We've enjoyed every meal I've made from here - I've even started making my own cheese and sourdough starter for breads...the greatest thing is that I can adapt these to suit my diet as I must have gluten free!

These recipes are awesome, my kids and husband love everything I've made from here. I bring her desserts to parties and people are astounded at how simple yet wonderful they are.

Thank you Maria Helm Sinskey, you've helped make my life a little easier.

Family meals Exactly what it is  May 5, 2009
Lovely book with great tips for including kids in the process of making family meals. Luckily my kids are not super picky eaters and love to help/watch the process of where their food is coming from.
