"Somewhere To Belong" By: Judith Miller  Jun 9, 2010
"Somewhere To Belong" By: Judith Miller

"Somewhere To Belong", is set in one of seven villages settled by devout Christians who believe in `cooperative Living', a rather simple type of lifestyle, while integrating their Faithful services to God. There are two main characters throughout the story, Johanna Ilg, and Berta Schumacher. Johanna has lived in the village of Amana, Iowa, her entire lifetime, always longing to see the outside world, she truly knows that she is grounded for life in Amana. Berta on the other hand, is the total opposite of Johanna. She has lived a rather privileged life of sorts, so coming from the big city of Chicago, to settle into a much simpler lifestyle in Amana, she is very resistant and rebellious! Johanna sets off with the difficult task of helping Berta become accustomed to the "Amana ways"of living. Berta is resistant of course, as she was not expecting to stay forever, she was only expecting to stay for a visit! During this journey, the two girls develop a friendship and learn many life changing secrets about each other's families. This story is about the power of faith, love, forgiveness, and not letting circumstance rule your future. I really enjoyed how the author alternated the characters throughout the chapters, it gave a new perspective in each chapter, and kept one wondering what was going to happen next in the story, and also kept the story interesting and the reader coming back for more. I will definitely read more from Judith Miller! As per FTC Guidelines, I must state that I was given a review copy to read from Bethany House Publishers. My opinions are my own, and are in no way positively or negatively influenced, due to receiving this copy to review.

Somewhere to Belong  Jun 8, 2010
I was given Somewhere To Belong by Judith Miller. This book is from the Daughters of Amana series and is published by BethanyHouse.

Of the many historical fiction books I have read, this one is by far the most detailed. I enjoyed reading about life in Iowa and Chicago in 1877. The lives of Johanna and Berta are very different, yet they share a common thread. Their families have secrets. Not little secrets either, big ones. I imagine most families have secrets they'd like to keep hidden, however, some secrets cause more harm than good and should be shared with those who need to know. Other secrets need to be buried deep.

This book is divided into sections. When the story is about Berta, her name will be listed as the title. When it's about Johanna, her name will be the title. This was kinda odd for me, but by the time I finished reading, it all made sense.

The book itself is about two young ladies, Berta and Johanna. The youngest, Berta, is 17. Berta's family has arrived in Amana in order to get out of Chicago and the hustle-and-bustle lifestyle. Amana is a place where people live simple lives, wear bonnets instead of fancy feathered hats, and all work together. Berta is not a happy camper about this decision and gives everyone grief because of it. Johanna has always lived in Main Amana but she longs to see the "outside world". Unfortunately, one of her brothers died and the other left Amana to live in this "outside world" so her parents are really afraid Johanna will leave them as well. Johanna was given the task of training Berta, which ends up being a huge undertaking.

This is a good book. I can definitely see that this could become a great series as I'd like to see what happens to the girls as they grow up.

BethanyHouse gave this book to me in exchange for my honest review.

One to Enjoy!  Jun 7, 2010
This story takes place in the Amana Colonies of Iowa in 1877. The story involves two girls, one who grew up in the Colonies and one a recent and unwilling transplant to the Colonies. Both girls have to decide where they fit in with this community and lifestyle. This is not your typical "plain" tale about living a simpler life. There are some twists and turns here and it is refreshing to see the fact portrayed that these people have to deal with some of the thornier issues of life just like everyone else. This book is well researched and well written. The characters are believable and likable. This was an excellent story and I would recommend it to anyone who just wants a relaxing reading experience. Bethany House provided me with a copy of this book for review. Thanks Bethany House!

Somewhere to Belong  Jun 6, 2010
Johanna is 20 and lives in Amana in 1877 which is, to me, similar to an Amish community. The people who live there live apart from other people and believe in a simple life dedicated to God. Their clothes are more simple and plain and their lives are peaceful and dedicated to hard work in order to please God.

Berta is a spoiled teenager whose parents decide to move to Amana from Chicago. She's used to the finest clothes and a very extravagent life filled with shopping and parties and no respect or responsibilities. Needless to say she's not happy to be in Amana and causes all sorts of problems with her disobedience and laziness.

The story switches back and forth between both women's viewpoints. Johanna is assigned to help Berta become adjusted to life in Amana which is far from easy. Johanna has always longed to see Chicago and visit her brother who left Amana to live there years ago. Berta encourages this because of her dislike of Amana.

I don't want to give away the story but Johanna finds out a secret from her past and does visit Chicago. Berta causes no end to problems with Johanna not there to guide her and in the end both women learn where they truly belong.

I have to say this is an amazing book. I had a very hard time putting it down and devoured it in two days. It has parts that are funny and will make any parent feel sorry for Berta's parents. It has so many parts that made me wish I could live in Amana with the peaceful, simple life they live that's so different from life today. In the end I was left with tears in my eyes and a great desire to read more.

I really recommend this book. It will make you smile, laugh and cry. It is Christian in nature but it's not preachy at all. It's simply part of who they are.

A Tranquil Drama  Jun 3, 2010
"Misunderstandings, secrets, words left unsaid - ..."

The characters of Somewhere to Belong are developed well enough to sense the story through their own eyes. Not only are the main characters of Johanna Ilg and Berta Schumacher so distinctly molded, but I also appreciate the strong portrayals of Carl Froehlich and Larissa Ilg. Miller exquisitely captures the setting of the Amana village and culture with its rules, regulations, morals and issues deemed taboo which, on the contrary, would even be the norm in the surrounding populace of the nineteenth century. The era, being one of my favorites, feels adequately supported throughout this lovely tale.

Judith Miller has a profound talent for lucidly narrating such antithetical points of view from Johanna and Berta. She also succeeds with the progression of each character adapting and coming to terms with the startling matters at hand.

There are only a few downfalls that I am compelled to point out, which are enough to overlook especially if encouraged beforehand. First, the incessant detailing of the duties in the Küche grows monotonous after several chapters. Also I would love to focus more on the potential courtships and amour surrounding Johanna and Carl as well as Berta and Rudolf. Ultimately, the exceptional finale is worth the reading for. And regarding the ending, however, I have to question the fate of Rudolf's involvement with Berta. I feel that is a loose end left alone that I anxiously awaited for.

Conclusively, I am surprised by how much I enjoy this book. The serenity of Amana amid 1877 so vividly painted by Miller in her textured words becomes a welcome escape. A sweet tale of innocence, youth and faith contrasted by deception and betrayal is what I will definitely recommend to others as well as anticipate any sequels to. Not only will I check out Judith Miller's other works, but I truly hope she continues on with the Daughters of Amana series.

"God is interested in all of us. You need only spend time with Him to discover His love for you."
