I love the Holman Christian Standard Bible in print form due to its accuracy combined with readability. I also have several Audio Bibles and like most of them very much.
Unfortunately, this particular audio bible is one of the two worst versions I have. The narrator's accent doesn't bother me here, but what does is that the music throughout the reading is so loud and distracting as to make it nearly impossible to listen to the bible.
I would recommend any of the Max McLean "Listener's" bibles (KJV, NIV or ESV) or a reading by Alexander Scourby as an alternative to this reading. Either of these versions can also be partially listened to from their websites for evaluation before buying. | | | | A treasure to behold! Dec 6, 2005 |
Sometimes, READING the Bible can be very difficult for me, especially when I finish a tough night on the job, and my eyes don't want to focus on words on a page. This is especially trying when the words are small and the page is BRIGHT white. The Christian Standard Bible is currently my favorite translation, and I have tried the whole "read a few chapters each day" business, but I often get tired after reading half of what I originally intended, not because the text is boring, but due to the fact that I get so drowsy so quickly.
Purchasing the Experiencing The Word Audio Bible was a very good investment on my part, and it has been an extremely rewarding experience. I greatly enjoy hearing David Payne's voice, and his accent, for some strange reason, lends a more "literary" quality to the narration. He reads at a pace I can keep up with pretty well. His voice provides a dramatic air that keeps things interesting.
The only thing I would say in the way of constructive criticism concerns the musical score in the background. I do not, per se, object to music in the background of an audio Bible narration, but I often find myself distracted from the narration and listening instead to the music, as music can easily distract me. I found this especially annoying on another audio Bible I recently bought, the New Century Version New Testament called "The Word Becomes Flesh". Again, I liked the narrations, but they were frequently drowned out by the background music. My advice? TONE DOWN THE MUSIC, PLEASE. Thank you.
Otherwise, the Experiencing The Word HCSB Audio Bible is something I will treasure for life. I can't think of a more perfect gift to give someone than David Payne narrating the Greatest Book of All. | | | Write your own review about Experiencing the Word Bible (HCSB Audio - 64 CDs)
